What is Yoga?
Yoga is considered to be a mind-body type of complementary and alternative medicine practice that encourages overall health and wellness. Yoga is not just about working out it’s about a healthy balanced lifestyle.
The practice originated in India about 5,000 years ago, and has been adapted in a variety of ways and styles. Yoga is now common place in most leisure centres, gyms, schools and community centres all over the UK.
The main components of yoga are:
- Postures – (asana) to make our bodies strong and flexible
- Breathing – (pranayama) to keep our lungs and heart healthy
- Meditation/relaxation – to lower stress and anxiety

What do I need to begin?
All you really need to begin practicing yoga is a bit of curiosity and some comfortable clothing, leggings, or shorts, and a t-shirt that’s not too loose. Once you have established a regular practice you might want to buy your own yoga mat.
